Beware......

An interesting thing happened to me this morning. At around 7 am the phone rang. It was an automated call, allegedly from my bank, saying that my check card had been compromised. I was supposed to then enter the card number so I could re-activate it. A million things went through my mind in a very short period of time. All those many emails that circulate about people getting a phone call and they are supposed to enter something (For example, the number 1 and then they are billed thousands of dollars for a long distance call they didn't even make.) and terrible things happen. I always think these emails are urban legends but.......apparently they aren't. I hung up the phone without entering anything. I just couldn't think of a reason to re-activate this card before finding out why or how it had been compromised. So I waited until 8:30 (yep, banker's hours) to call. It was a hoax!! They had had several calls about people receiving this fake phone call including a bank supervisor and one person who wasn't even a customer. My bank said that they would NEVER have an automated call asking for an account number. My paranoia has paid off. Just wanted to let everyone know. Be careful out there.

I am just thinking about the poor clueless people who actually did enter their bank account number! Way to be sharp (in the am too)!
